What is Acupressure Massage / Mats?
Acupressure Massage a specific massage technique that aims to decrease pain, clear tension in muscles, increase blood circulation and promote deep states of relaxation.
Acupressure or sometimes also called Needle Stimulation pad (NSP) can be effective to relieve headaches, back ache and help to manage conditions such as fibromyalgia. Acupressure Mats are meant to work similarly to acupuncture, which is supposed to help balance the body, relieve pain, stress and more.
Acupressure Mats kind of look like short Yoga Mats that have plastic spikes covering the surface that are designed to apply pressure at points throughout your body.
Acupressure mats are one way you can try acupressure or warm up to acupuncture without committing to having to deal with real needles. They're inexpensive and you don't need anyone else to help you insert needles like in acupuncture, making it appropriate for social distancing and easy to do at home.
How do Acupressure Mats Work?
Acupressure mats use the same principles of acupuncture, acupressure, and reflexology.
The first thought is that using a mat with so many “pins” on them (most mats have over 6000 points, pillows over 1700 points), increases the chance of a novice stimulating the 100+ acupressure points on their back (known as meridians). This can give some of the same benefits as a professional acupressure or acupuncture sessions. The main difference is the acupressure mats are not able to target specific issues or points.
The second thought is that the benefits come from the increase of blood flow the mat stimulates. The first time you use the mat it may feel a little uncomfortable to have those thousands of points digging into your skin. That pressure increases blood flow to the areas it stimulates. Give it time. After a few minutes, you will feel your back (or other body parts) getting warmer, which causes the muscles to relax. That increased circulation is thought to be healing in addition to relaxing.
